Protests to Prevent Lithium Mines Rage on in Serbia

Thousands of farmers in Serbia are continuing their efforts to prevent the construction of a lithium mine. Lithium, a key component in batteries for electric vehicles and electronic devices, has become increasingly valuable. Given Serbia’s economic situation, the government is seeking ways to generate revenue and reduce reliance on China for this critical resource. While the promise of jobs and financial gain may seem appealing, the long-term consequences of environmental damage are far too great to ignore. The toxic elements from the mine could irreversibly harm not just the environment, but the health of future generations, particularly vulnerable children. The construction of the mine has been suspended for the time being, but the land has already seen some of its negative effects.
